p2828: Now we are up on the plateau. This dismal town called Phari-close to 19000 feet and here it only thaws for about three weeks every year. Here there is said to be only one way of disposing of anything. You simply throw it out the window where it quickly freezes in the street. In this way the street level soon rises so that you have to cut a door where a window was and add another story to the house. This goes on passably well until the thaw – I leave the rest to your imagination.
